The web hosting company SoftLayer has introduced managed hosting, which will offer enterprise-class computing environments with 24 hour management and monitoring support for key components of those environments including database, security, monitoring, backup and storage management.

SoftLayer has created a giant hosting organization out of the two biggest players in the unmanaged dedicated server hosting business, and until now had distinguished itself by providing customers with the ability to manage their own environments via its portal. Now the new managed hosting is available for cloud, dedicated, and integrated environments with the support of the company's portal and its API. The company has worked its expertise in automation and self-management into the managed hosting product, offering customers the opportunity to self-manage some parts of their hosted environments while the company manages others. This is a unique feature in the managed hosting world, and allows for better performance and flexibility for clients.

Many businesses were affected by a major outage at the Amazon.com web hosting data center in Virginia on Thursday and Friday. The effects of this service interruption were widespread because Amazon is a major provider of data center hosting for cloud computing services.

Thousands of smaller companies who depend on Amazon to run their website operations, store their business data and keep track of their email service were negatively impacted. A number of well known social media websites like Reddit, Quora, Foursquare and HootSuite were affected by the outage. This incident serves as a lesson to many companies that when it comes to cloud computing it's best to have a good backup plan. Those that didn't lost a full day of business, and it was especially costly for companies that do most of their business via email.

In the 24/7 online world, no company can afford for its homepage to be unavailable for any period of time. Web host 1&1 has launched a new dual hosting range of packages with the goal of eliminating downtime for clients.

Dual hosting means that your website is stored in two geographically separate data centers in order to add location redundancy to other security measures. 1&1, based in Germany, is the first big hosting provider to make the double security of geo-redundant servers available on budget hosting packages. This guarantee of maximum availability 365 days a year was previously accessible only to companies with a large budget. With dual hosting, all of a client's data is mirrored across two of 1&1's sites almost in real-time. If any problems occur at one of the locations, including an electricity or server blackout, client sites are automatically taken over by the other data center.
